Random Acts of Kindness

by Ingrid on August 1st, 2006

The other night, I found myself in World of Warcraft, too tired to go questing or farming (it was already nearing bedtime), with auctions already up. I felt like doing something different, but wasn’t sure what.

I saw a little Gnome girl asking for money to train. I have to admit: I have a weakness for Gnomes. They are so cute I can’t help myself. But, I opted not to give her any money on the basis of principle. So after a while of doing nothing, I logged out, came back in with my Mage, and ran into the little Gnome girl in the Mage training area.

For some reason, I was feeling generous, so I sent her a Whisper (Tell) asking if she wanted 1 gold. She was really excited and thanked me about 30 times, and ran back in to train.

Feeling happy that I had helped a fellow Mage, I logged back out, and came back as my Main. I hopped on my mount, and rode to the nearest Newbie spawning area. Once there, I ran around giving away money and bags to the recently spawned toons. I made sure to avoid the ones that were obvious alts. I’m sure they were all alts, but some players were more obvious than others.

Some seemed overly happy and excited by my offerings, others were just like, “Sure, thanks.” Either way, it was a fun and different endeavor.

For those of you who play MMOs or online games, are you ever motivated to run around doing random acts of kindness for other players?

Yeah, although I don’t give away money, I always stay around for a bit when someone is fighting a tough mob, whether it’s an alliance or horde player.

And of course, when running past someone in their teens fighting wolf or what have you, I usually perform some one hit kill to the mob and feel good about myself.

I imagine that the player I just helped was working on his/her first character.

When I played Ultima Online, I constantly gave money to the poor n00bs. I felt bad for them and most people just went around slaughtering the poor fools for fun.

In WoW, I don’t think I’ve ever had more than 10 gold at any one time, but I still give away whatever I can afford.

DAMNIT! I do that in real life, too! I’m such a tool!

Yeah. Recently I had to farm something for an alt of mine, so I went into this lowbie area to get it and there was a lowbie doing the quest and farming the same thing. I invited her to join my group and promptly slaughtered everything in sight. Knowing that my alt probably had the same quests she did, I asked her if she had any named creatures to kill. She said yeah. So on the way back to town I killed him and all of his little buddies for her. She was kind enough to not only say thanks, but leave the group once we got back to town.

And then, of course. There’s all the random acts of kindness I do for a certain editor of Play-Girlz. ;)
