Revolution’s Real Name: Wii
After a lot of speculation (and perhaps hopeful thinking on the half of Revolution fans), Nintendo has finally come out and announced the final name of their next generation console. It will not, as I would have been perfectly fine with, remain as the Revolution, a name that I thought pretty accurately represented all of the Nintendo propaganda they have been shoveling at us…no, the tiny upstart will be known as Wii.
Why Wii? Wii here at Play-Girlz (well mii anyway) haven’t the faintest idea what would possess Nintendo to come up with such a strange, unintuitive name. Wii (mii) would like to raise an eyebrow and politely ask that Revo be returned. Not that Wii isn’t cute or anything, but it’s…awfully cute. It makes me think of teddy bears in fact.
Nintendo’s announcement of the new name had the following to say:
While the code-name “Revolution” expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer.
Wii will break down the wall that separates video game players from everybody else.
Wii will put people more in touch with their games…and each other…
Wii has a distinct ‘ii’ spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play…
So that’s Wii.
But now Nintendo needs you.
Because, it’s really not about you or me.
It’s about Wii.
And together, Wii will change everything
Personally I think the name Revolution had a lot more power, and a lot more potential than Wii, although strange spellings and quirky names tend to grow on me over time. Will this be the case with Wii? I’m not really sure. My initial reaction in no. It doesn’t fit right, it doesn’t feel comfy, and it puts me in mind of baby talk. Partially clever to be sure, but I don’t think that it does anything to engender appeal.
