Rock Band Goes Gold
Erin’s Edit: Due to having guitars on the brain thanks to this post, I accidently called Rock Band “Guitar Band” throughout the original piece, thus creating a monsterous hybrid creator with the personality of MTV and the spotty business history of Activision. Apologies!
Harmonix and MTV have their sights set on topping the Guitar Hero franchise with their latest iteration of the rhythm and rock genre.
Rock Band, a “groundbreaking music video game”, is due to hit shelves just in time for Christmas (November 20th) for both the 360 and the PS3. Be prepared to fork over $169.99 for the pleasure of some new tunes, because this thrill ride don’t come cheap.
They’re up against pretty stiff competition, what with Guitar Hero III and their publisher Activision lording publicity and record breaking revenue numbers over anyone who will listen. It’s hard not to be cocky when your own guitar game hauls in over $100 million….in the first week of sales. Insane? Yes I think so. Question is, will people go with the brand (Guitar Hero), or the folks who began the brand (Harmonix), who promise that Rock Band is some sort of miraculous, ground-breaking take on living room rockers.
Me? If I’ve got the GH guitar, the other GH games, and frankly my fill of playing cheesy 80’s rock tunes, then I stick with GH II and watch Rock Band struggle to eek out a living in a progressively clogged area of the industry.
