Rockstar’s Sunday Driver Now on DVD

Fans of the game developer Rockstar, makers of the controversial Grand Theft Auto series, have made a foray into alternative media types with their documentary called Sunday Driver.
This “in-depth” documentary takes a look at low-rider lifestyle down in Compton, where a “community” works together to build the bomb-diggity in customizable vehicles while fighting against the stereotyping and injustices associated with their craft.
I watched the trailer, which is available at the site, and their passion for cars is undeniable. These folks have a pride in their handiwork and in their organization (the film focuses on a particular club called The Majestics) that reminds me of children showing off their artwork. And I mean that in a very good way. They’re tinkerers at heart, and like to have their accomplishments be recognized within their own community. Now, thanks to Rockstar, outsiders can have a peek into Majestics: Compton and see what it’s all about.
Rockstar is really attempting to capitalize on its hip-hop culture reputation and pulled off a great piece of indirect marketing by associating their name with a stored California institution. Whether the movie is decent or not remains to be seen, you couldn’t really tell much from the trailer, but it was a smart move to ride the success of the GTA series into new areas with the possibility of expanding their audience. I may not be a Rockstar fan (quite the opposite), and this may not be my kind of movie, but I have to hand it to them. They’re doing a lot of things right. The special edition release should keep sales at an acceptable level and whet the appetite of gamers for their next release Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories, due out in the States on October 24th.
The DVD is available as of October 18th as part of the release of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Special Edition. The UMD version will be available later in the fall.
