Shoulda Made-a Monk

by Erin on June 19th, 2006

car_monk_new.jpgI’m now well into my Guild Wars career, with my first MMO character ever quickly approaching her max level thanks to some rather uneventful weekends on the homefront and my penchant for trying to sneak in an hour of play before bed. Shameless I know.

Anywho, I can very firmly say that I’m most happy with my choice of professions. Being an elementalist/ranger is definitely for me. Not only can I unleash a fury of meteors and freeze opponents in their tracks, but I can send Faustus, my loyal feline companion, to claw the absolute hell out of things. It’s a good life it is. Fire, brimstone, and fangs. I know that at some point I will have the opportunity to switch secondary professions, from ranger to something else, and while the thought of learning some mesmer skills is intriguing, I’m way too attached to my ability to use a bow when I feel like hunting some low levels monsters, and have gotten far too fond of my furry comrade.

Still, while I sit in the outposts and mission zones watching people put parties together, or die outrageously in Villany of Galrath because Alesia the Healer Henchman has run off and aggroed three dozen Appretices of Verata, I come to realize just how valuable a monk would be. So much so that I may try one out in the last remaining slot of the account I’m using. Now I do wonder if I’ll get frustrated with my less-than-elementalist offense, nor do I particularly relish the thought of being the target numero uno, but at the same time, I can’t help but feel that the Monk profession is indeed noble and uselful and rather than killing things, perhaps I should save instead? Perhaps a monk ranger so that I can keep Faustus, or have Faustette.

I can\’t say I’ve ever really been the healer type. Always magic yes, I have no desire to be a tank and run around screaming ‘SMASH!’ all the time. But I tend to gravitate towards offensive magic, elves, sneaky buggers, and anything that doesn’t pulse with steroids.

Thoughts on this? Who always plays healers, and why? What sort of classes appear to the MMOers out there?

To monk or not to monk…

In WoW, I’ve tried a few different professions (they’re called classes there) : rogue, priest, warrior, mage, hunter. My favorites are the rogue and the priest. I love playing a healer, but it can get boring. By contrast, I love kicking butt with my rogue (she’s way deadly) and get bored less with her. Though admittedly, if I level up my priest I should have more fun with her, as characters become much more fun as they become more powerful.

We should try playing Guild Wars with you… then I can try a monk and you can safely unleash your elementalist fury ;)

I now forget what I chose for my Guild Wars toon. In WoW I play a Druid, mainly, though I pretty much have one of everything.

The Druid is my favorite though because she can do it all: heal, fight, sneak up, take damage, run fast … to an extent, she\\\’s all the classes in one. I\’ve specced her to be a kick-ass healer though, because that way Karine can kick ass with her Rogue and I can heal her while she does that.

I love healing. I love running around and seeing people in trouble and just giving them a buff and healing them. It makes me feel really useful that I can help someone else a) without stealing their XP and b) without taking away the satisfaction of the kill.

Ahem. the correct term is “RAWR!”

And there’s nothing more satisfying than wading into a group of enemies and just laying waste to their pixelated forms. I may not do the most damage, but you could hit me with a truck and I wouldn’t notice.

Though when I was playing GuildWars I had a Necro/Mesmer that I was quite fond of.

I guess I’m struck by the monk urge partially out of curiosity about healers and partially out of a selfish want to be the most desirable character in an outpost. People stalk monks. They beg and plead and grovel. I think I could stand for some grovelling.

Karine and Ingrid: We should totally hook up for some rampaging in game.

I used not to play any melee types or any healer types, since I’m an absolute complete dmg whore in heart. Than one time I made a mesmer/warrior pve char (it was horrible in pve) and that changed my opinion a lot. I changed my Necromancer towards a more defensive annoying skillset instead of plain dmg and these days I even do a pretty good monk..

No warior or assassin for me though… BORING :D
