SOE Sucked Back Into The Gaming Mothership
Sony Online Entertainment (SOE), the MMORPG focused head of the Sony hydra, had enjoyed a semi-autonomous existence up until the end of last week, when it was announced that it would be swallowed by the voraciously feeding mouth of Sony Computer Entertainment.
To be honest, the move has little visible impact for consumers, and makes a lot of sense for the company. Now the MMOGers will be reporting to SCE head honcho Kazuo Hirai starting on April the 1st, rather than the previous set up, which saw them an accountable division of Sony Pictures Entertainment. Now we’ve got computers with computers, nerd with nerd as you will, instead of massive online game publisher being held in check by silver screen specialists. Sony is using the reorganization as an opportunity to use SOE for the development of games suited to PC and PS3 platforms.
Both Smedley and Hirai seem to be tickled by the arrangement, but other than the reporting structure, not much else has changed. SOE will still be pumping out MMOG’s, President John Smedley will still be in the hot seat, and EverQuest will still be sucking the will to live out out its addicted account holders.
