Sonic RPG Coming Down The Pipes

by Erin on June 28th, 2007

I’m not sure whether Sega realizes the amount of torment that die-hard Sonic fans have been through over the years. Flops, delays, cancellations and all around piss-poor franchise management has seen the once mighty hedgehog become the subject of rolling eyes and derision. That may be the reason that for the next installment of Sonic’s adventures, Sega has hooked up with a developer whose reputation isn’t trash: Bioware.

As the creators of perennially popular titles like Baldur’s Gate, Jade Empire, and the Neverwinter Nights series, Bioware ain’t just some RPG pretender. Let’s hope it has enough clout though, to inject some oomph and resurrect the ailing Sonic brand. An RPG game is an interesting way of trying to accomplish this, though the universal appeal of that style of game is certainly questionable.

The game will only be available on the Nintendo DS in 2008 and looks to create a story-driven experience focusing on Sonic’s “broad appeal”.

It could work. Super Mario RPG certainly was fun.

And wow, the developer that Sega got for Sonic is a heavyweight. I’m just a bit disappointed that Bioware is putting in their time and effort for a Sonic game instead of the next best Star Wars RPG.

I know! I think Bioware and I certainly don’t think Sonic, but it could be a great opportunity for Bioware to flex some creative muscle and breathe some life back into the brand, and it’s definitely a good idea on Sega’s part to inject some new blood into the developer mix.

Hmm. It’s just a bit strange that this broad appeal they’re aiming for is limited to the Nintendo DS. Sure, practically every kid now has one–but if they’re aiming for broad appeal, they should’ve made this multiplatform.

After all, the PS2 is still the console king when it comes to total number of units sold. Now that’s broad appeal.
