Sony Giggles at Microsoft’s Losses

by Erin on January 28th, 2006

Microsoft may be hurting, but their biggest competition is sitting pretty atop the continued success of their handheld system. Sony Corporation handed it its third quarter results and thumbed it’s nose at the Xbox 360 by posting a 51% increase in revenue.

This extra chunk of change will result in Sony being in the black as a company for the first time in eleven years. How? Why? Weren’t they predicting losses in the $85 million range as recently as October? Well yes they were, but thanks to their line of Bravia LCD tvs, and an approximate raise in the video game sector of 50% over previous totals, Sony is now looking at a profit of $600 million. How’s that for a turn around?

One of the largest contributors to the video game success is one of Sony’s most versatile products: the PSP. Total sales for this little guy now sit at over the 15 million unit mark, with over 6 million being sold in the third quarter alone.

360? What 360??

Didn’t the 360 that people stood in lines around the buildings in the freezing cold and pouring rain get a nice reputation of chewing up games? :) No wonder Sony is sitting pretty.
