Sony Resorts to Freebies To Sell PS3

by Erin on February 28th, 2007

Considering how poor (relative to expectations) the PS3 sales and launch hype have been since it hit North American shores, it’s not really surprising that Sony feels that it needs to bundle in some cool free stuff to entice folks into buying the pricey system.

In Australia, where a PS3 will gouge you for an astounding $999.95 Aussie dollars, the impending March 23rd release date is an occasion that Sony is doing its darnedest to make successful.

Included with each of the first 20,000 PS3 purchases in the land down under, will be a Blu-Ray version of blond Bond-shell flick, Casino Royale. Free downloads of Gran Turismo, already available in other regions, will also be offered.

Similar ploys, such as the offer of a Blu-Ray movie for the U.S. launch and free game demo downloads, have been used by Sony marketers in an attempt to combat speculation that purchases and interest in the new system were flagging.

In the words of one industry watcher:

“They have to sweeten the deal a little bit,” said Hiroshi Kamide, director of research and game expert at KBC Securities Japan in Tokyo. “The problem with the product so far is that no one has fully understood why it’s so expensive.”

I don’t know about you, but including one lousy movie and a few demos isn’t going to convince me to pay a cool grand for anything.

Be nice if they offered a version of the PS3 that didn’t have the expensive ass blu-ray player.

I don’t think Sony is getting that no matter how good a deal is people just aren’t willing to drop that much money on something.

Yeah, I may get a state of the art, next gen gaming console with blu-ray and what not, but that’s still $600 I won’t have to, you know…buy food or pay rent with.

But by God, I will be the coolest, hungriest hobo on the curb.

    Kangaroo Jack! *shakes head*

Is Warner Brothers associated with Sony?

Quigley Down Under would have been better :P

Now let’s see; I can get an XBOX 360 and a Wii for that price.

If Sony brought down the price of the PS3 about 200 dollars (it is $600 right?) I would look into getting it. Even though the Wii is a new idea. The only good thing about the PS3 is the graphics (from what I heard could be wrong)
