Sony Tells All!….Sort of

by Erin on March 15th, 2006

Despite the hype for a world-changing announcement from Sony regarding their wunderkind, the PS3, yesterday’s 2006 Playstation Business Briefing in Tokyo really did do much other than to throw a bone to rabidly waiting press. Sony Computer Entertainment president Ken Kutagari discussed the upcoming console, but gave no hints as to a price point (one miiiillion dollars…mwahaha…hahaha…) or any discussion whatsoever about the kind of games we can expect.

Kater at GamerGod.com feels that this lack of game tidbits is due to the impending bulk of E3, which will act as the perfect platform to create a massive buzz for the products. I would tend to agree, but can’t help but be minorly annoyed that I have to wait until May (at the very very earliest) to even know whether the potential launch list games will be as vomitous as the 360’s. The whole affair struck me as a bit of ’say a lot without saying too much at all’. Kutagari did reveal that Sony would be executing a worldwide, simultaneous launch, which is great for our friends in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere, and also that there would be some sort of on-line facility. No word as to what this on-line thingie will be capable of, so it remains to be seen whether it will be relegated to the shadow of Live! or outshine it with its brilliance.

Some of the key points:

  • PS3 will be launched in November 2006
  • The launch will be as close to simultaneous as humanly possible
  • No price point was announced
  • Sony have a Live-style on-line facility ‘Playstation Network Platform’ (PNP?) prepared
  • The PS3 will accomodate a hard-drive though it is unclear whether it will be packaged or bought separately
  • No software was announced, this will likely be saved for E3 but it is safe to expect small glimpses of information now the rabbit is out of the hat
  • Sony believe they can produce 1 million units a month to solve the pipeline problems Microsoft suffered

Bit of a let down if you ask me, as far as information goes, but we’ll see what happens in May before I write Sony off as an entirely coy little jerk.
