Spore To Spawn On Macs From Start

Great news for us Mac gamers! One of the most highly anticipated games ever, Will Wright’s Spore, has been confirmed for simultaneous release to both the PC and Mac. The game was shown to eager Apple fans running on a Mac at the Macworld Expo this past week and reflects a much broader move on the part of Electronic Arts to bring some of its key franchises to what is a growing segment of the computer using community.
EA is working with a Canadian company, TransGaming Technologies, to make it as easy as possible for publishers to make and ship a game for multiple operating systems. Their software essentially acts as a translator, converting Windows-specific function calls to ones that route properly on other OS, like Mac or Linux.
If things go well for EA and the market demand is high enough, we may see more publishers opting to cash in on the Mac market, something that I certainly would like to see. I’m overjoyed that Spore, at least, will be offered for glorification on my aluminum iMac, making for a dual serving of design innovation and heart-rending beauty. But I gush….
Spore is also due to come out for the DS and the Wii.
