Super Mario Galaxy Tops For 2007

by Erin on January 7th, 2008

Play-Girlz.com asked it’s readers to weigh in on deciding the top game to come out of the hectic 2007 year in the games industry. Guests were able to add suggestions of their own in order for some of the more marginal, less blockbuster titles to receive the recognition that the Play-Girlz community felt they deserved.

After a long month of warring numbers, an exceedingly close race between less-than-surprising rivals. A total of 115 votes were received, but in the end, the standings looked a little something like this:

Top 10 of 2007: Who Makes The Cut?

10. Need For Speed: Pro Street [3%]NFSpro_street.jpg

With an overall critic rating of 70/100, it seems as though the Need For Sped franchise is relying more on a loyal fanbase then building further critical acclaim. Despite solid mechanics, the game was said to be missing a little bit of oomph that kept previous games interesting. It also got slapped for the amount of corporate sponsorship in the game, and the ability for players to sidestep skill grinding by using real cash to purchase upgrades.

bioshock.jpg 9. Bioshock [4%]

Across platforms, Bioshock scored an impressive 95/100 with reviewers, though some concern was expressed over some of the technical issues and high performance demands required in the PC version. Nonetheless, Bioshock cleaned up at the 2007 Spike TV Awards, nabbing Best Game, Best Xbox 360 Game, and Best Original Score, and also being nominated it for four awards: Best Shooter, Best Graphics, Best PC Game, Best Soundtrack.

masseffectboxart.jpg 8. Mass Effect [8%]

Another critical hit, Bioware’s Mass Effect racked up a 91/100 scoring with media outlets. Pushing a story-driven, sci-fi action/RPG title into the upper echelons of a year’s releases is no easy task. At times the AI has been criticized as more “A” than “I”, but that fact has been largely overshadowed by approval in the realm of art, story, and atmosphere.

CrysisBoxArt.jpg 7. Crysis [9%]

People have been ooo-ing and ahhh-ing over the graphical prowess of this game for years, in particular the facial renderings and lifelike movements of the Personally, I find the inclusion of current political biases disappointing, and the asteroid-crashes-to-Earth-unleashing-aliens hack a little old, but there’s absolutely no denying that this game is gorgeous. Another 91/100 critic scoring.

assassinscreed.jpg 6. Assassin’s Creed [10%]

Big, bold and beautiful, that pretty much sums up Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed. Fans love the huge open-world concept, attention to detail and mix of required skills, while discontent has been raised over the repetitiveness of the missions, the “clever” ending, and some graphical issues. Frankly I would have liked it a heckuva lot better without the twist. Templar history is hot right now and it would have been a wicked game had there not been the addition of an interesting, but unnecessary futuristic slant. 83/100 overall rating.

CoD4.jpg 5. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare [10%]

Yeah, yeah, we still love our shooters. Despite the current atmosphere of backlash against not only the genre, but also sequel franchises, CoD 4 managed to wow the critics and fans alike to be one of the biggest games in 2007. The multiplayer mode seems to have gotten most of the focus here and offers a great progressive system that keeps players coming back time and again. Single player campaigning has taken a bit of a hit as a result, and is sadly brief. 93/100 overall rating

halo3boxart.JPG 4. Halo 3 [12%]

Arguably the most anticipated title to come out of 2007, Bungie’s Halo 3 had the majority of the gaming community salivating over every single screenshot and news tidbit released, building into a nice little fervour just in time for fall purchasing mayhem. Loads of new “stuff”, but not tremendously new in any other sense. Complaints seem to focus more on the community than the game itself, notably the trash-talking, goofing-off annoyances in multiplayer. The AI is a little sketch, but still an improvement over previous editions. 93/100 overall rating

RockBandBoxArt.jpg 3. Rock Band [13%]

There was a lot of hooplah over the rivalry between GHIII and newcomer Rock Band, due mostly to the touchy circumstances surrounding the companies involved in development. If this poll is any measure of consumers though, it looks like there’s plenty of room for both titles to be successful. In Rock Band, you get the opportunity not only to be lead guitarist, but also a lead singer and drummer. The opportunity for multiplayer rock outs gives a more diversified feel. 92/100 overall on next-gen platforms.

GHIIIboxart.jpg 2. Guitar Hero III [14%]

With two of the top three games being music sims, I think it’s fair to say that we’ll be seeing a lot out of this genre in the years to come (for better or worse). With society as a whole in a period of morbid fascination over reality TV and musical versions like American Idol, music sims hit the scene at a very fortuitous moment. The challenge for developers will be to offer something new and unique in the future. Guitar Hero is the franchise that started this whole trend, and the third installment has been a rousing success. 84/100 overall rating.

1. Super Mario Galaxy [16%]SMGboxart.jpg

Even after all these years, Mario proves that he’s still got the stuffing to land at himself at the top. In this version of the Mario mythology, follow our tubby protagonist through space as he attempts to rescue Princess Peach from the ever-pesky Bowser. In a world of hyped up shooters and soul-sucking MMO’s, Mario holds his own with a sense of integrity to the origin of the brand. SMG has scooped up more awards then I care to list, while also winning a lot of fans based on the style, creativity and design. Looks like Play-Girlz.com readers agree with the pros, as this game garnered an astounding 97/100 across all media outlets.
