The O.C. Game?

Yup. No lie. The popular FOX TV series is in the process of becoming a “mobile video game,” according to several different sources, including Yahoo! News, and Joystiq. I had to double-check and triple-check because I couldn’t believe my eyes.
According to Yahoo!, “The style of play is similar to reality-simulation titles like ‘The Sims,’ allowing fans of the show to explore the ‘O.C.’ universe by dressing to impress, joining the right cliques, dating the right people and striving to fit into the ultra-trendy community.”
Well, I can’t think of anything more exciting than that! (Snore)
Joystiq proposes, “Maybe this is the secret to enticing that coveted female demographic to try gaming.” I imagine the game developers were thinking precisely the same thing when they came up with the idea, but I think the only people this game is going to appeal to is The O.C. fans in general. Of which there are more males than I would have imagined, having joined several O.C. LiveJournal communities…er, met … many guy fans.
I’m curious to see how this game fares when it’s released next year. I’m sure the die-hard fans (both male and female) will be the first ones at the door on release day, though I can’t imagine this prompting the casual O.C. watcher and female non-gamer to go out and get the game. But, I could easily be proven wrong. Adam Brody Seth has many powers of persuasion…
Personally, I enjoy watching The O.C. (a fact I’ve battled with since the moment I fell into its addictive clutches), and I love gaming, but this game sounds … well, lame. I’d be more interested if the point of the game was … oh, I don’t know, shooting down Marissa. Kirsten’s character could throw wine glasses as a form of attack (after having gulped down the contents, of course). Anything but a game about “dating the right people.” I mean, really.
Those commenting on Joystiq have suggested a Desperate Housewives game. Now that I would be interested in! Bring on Wisteria Lane!

I’m waiting for a good ER style game. I want this really complex gameplay, where you have to examine and treat and deal with difficult patients, but you also have to tip toe through hospital politics and interact with your fellow doctors….

I agree with everything you say Ingrid! Your blog is very well written, unfortunately I don’t watch the OC so I think a lot of your funnies went right over my head, sorry! Now if you were to write about “One Tree Hill” that would be a whole different story. But I probably would still not play a game about it. Games, not my cup of tea, or coffee or Stoli and cranberry juice! But thanks for keeping me informed who knows maybe one day I will find one that interests me!

Wow, when they developed this game they should have listened to your advice, Ingrid! I’m not into gaming but I’m into the O.C. The whole joy of the O.C. is that I can sit on my butt and not move a muscle so I have absolutely no interest in trying this game out.

[…] Hey, as long as it’s not about dressing to impress, joining the right gangs, dating the right mamas, and how to fit into the ultra-hip ghetto community, I’m happy. Although, admittedly, that sounds far more intriguing than other game premises I’ve heard lately. […]
