Think You’re A Final Fantasy Freak?
You might not hold a candle to the folks still clutching to their FFVII roleplaying creations on AOL. Leigh Alexander at The Escapist recently detailed the continued presence of steadfast FFVII roleplayers in her article Midgar Is Burning.
It’s an interesting read that tracks the loss of the OOC (out of character) persona altogether, and the struggles of the tight-knit group against violations of canon, and the invasion of characters from outwith the game. There seems to be an air of disbelief about the article, or a sort of gentle mocking of people partaking in these activities. Alexander cites the games age as though it sealed the participants utter insanity, and seems bemused at the depth of interaction between two people pretending to be something other than themselves.
I really don’t think this is much different than any other widely popular franchise. We’ve got Star Wars storylines still ongoing, far surpassing the limited scope and timeframe of the movies, the Lord of the Rings lends itself very naturally to rabid character based obsession, and we’ll have Harry Potter RPers until a time well distant in the future. People identify with certain characters, regardless of the media in which they are found, and use them as a creative outlet to express themselves, either strictly within the canon of the original, or as a mishmash of the character and themselves.
