Top 20 Game Publishers Announced

Game Developer magazine has released the 2005 edition of their annual “Top 20 Game Publishers” list.
The survey is not solely dependent upon revenue, also consideringnumber of title releases, average review score, producer quality, reliability of milestone payments, and staff-oriented indicators such as annual turnover, and the quality of staff pay and perks. Shock of all unending shocks, Electronic Arts walked away as #1 for the third straight year. It’s hard to compete with a company that rakes in $3.1 billion in revenue and pumps out more games every year than the rental place can shelf.
Game Developer did say, however, that EA’s monopoly was not without challenges. The rest of the top five consisted of: Activision, Microsoft, Nintendo and Sony, in that order. All of these publishers had strong years last year, particular Activision which rocketed up from the #7 spot to snag 2nd thanks to successful games like Tony Hawk Underground and Rome: Total War.

I find it interesting that EA came in as #1, when the company recently agreed to pay $15.6 million to settle an overtime lawsuit brought by graphic artists.
I for one am curious as to whether their ranking suffers next year, after seeing their reputation tarnished first by a game developer’s wife’s blog, then by the lawsuit.

Karine you’re turning into a totally gaming news nerd! Yes, the labour disputes that EA has had should have an effect on their rating, but either the $3.1 billion kind of overshadowed the fact that their employees were chained to their desks, or that happen after the magazine pulishers got their list together and the fiasco will affect next year.
