Turok Patch Nixes Reward For Team-Kill

by Erin on January 28th, 2008

Well thank *@$%) for that! turokTK.jpg

In what had to be one of the stupidest design inclusions in the history of multiplayer gaming, the upcoming Turok game for the 360 and PS3 had an achievement/accomplishment with the following description:

Grab Bag Acheivement: kill at least 1 creature, 1 enemy, 1 teammate, and yourself in a single online match

Does anyone see a problem with that? Doesn’t take much of a genius to see that the requirement of a team-kill in order to receive an award is kind of like placing a lit match in a room full of propane cylinders and waiting for some serious combustion. One of the oldest and most aggravating issues involved in playing multiplayer versions of games is the fact that they’re multiplayer, meaning you have to deal with differing maturity levels and constant swearing, badgering, team-killing, goofing off and general irritation.

Why Turok developer Propaganda, and publisher Touchstone thought the inclusion of a positive reinforcement of team-killing was a good idea baffles even the most intelligence-challenged of the online gaming community, but it took them this long to figure out that perhaps it wasn’t such a smooth move. Originally Propaganda had stated that they would consider releasing a patch only “if it does become an issue.” Apparently someone got a bloody clue and realized that an “issue” was inevitable on the volatile MP landscape and so they’ve gone ahead and developed the fix before the game’s release. Although the game will ship as is on February 5th, players can download a patch that corrects the achievement to “kill at least 1 creature, 1 enemy, and yourself”, removing the necessity of a nasty TK.
