Uncle Pennybags Outdoes MMORPGs
A while back I had posted a freebie online MS Point Currency Converter, which allowed visitors to check out exactly how much each of those wonderful microtransactions was sapping out of their pocket. Now, in a more pie-in-the-sky perspective on virtual economies and evolving notions of online wealth, Ren Reynolds at Terra Nova has taken a look at exactly how much each MMORPG’s currency is worth compared to two independent standards: the American dollar, and Monopoly bucks.

I looked at the chart and thought “huh, well isn’t that kind of neat that someone had the time and energy to do something so intriguingly pointless”, yet it appears this fun little exercise is running the comment gauntlet. Not everyone agrees with the assessment, and the outright nerdiness of the gaming economists is shining through with all the glory of a patina-loaded grail.
Useless knowledge? Oh you bet. But even if you skipped school, stayed in bed and drooled all over your laptop instead of doing anything vaguely productive, at least you can say you still learned something today. All you MMORPGers out there, get calculating! What’s your net virtual worth?
