Video Games Best The Music Biz?
A report from Pricewaterhouse Coopers indicates that video game consumerism in the U.S. may overtake sales of music, mirroring a wider, global trend. In its annual “Global Entertainment and Media Outlook” report, the firm outlines expected growth patterns for all types of entertainment and media for the years 2007-2011.
Led by climbing Asian numbers, the annual growth rate for gaming is predicted to be 9.1 percent, resulting in a 2011 market that approaches the $50 billion mark.
This rate of growth may well outstrip that of the music industry which, while still climbing, may not match the sheer pace of video games. The music industry’s stone age stance on digital distribution, particularly relative to the video game industry, may be a leading cause in the continued struggles of the once mammoth sector of entertainment. The explosion of spending on in-game advertising may also be contributing to the trend, with a $950 million advertising sector forecasted (conservatively)for the end of the decade.
