Where There Be Chicks, There Be D–…

by Erin on April 13th, 2006

margarine_icbinb_logo.gifIf you’ve at all been interested in the whole ’sex in games’ explosion, you no doubt know the name Brenda Brathwaite. She gets contacted for comments, quotes, opinions, articles and seminars on anything that even vaguely seems connected to adult gaming content. She herself said (paraphrased), in her extraordinarily entertaining session at GDC: ‘I’ve been designing games in this industry for decades, then I do the Play Boy game and suddenly I’m The Sex Lady’. Anyone hearing her shpiel on what the sex drive of a 39 year old woman is like might wonder if the moniker is not more fitting in a variety of meanings.
The Sex Lady, teaming up with frequent partner in crime and ‘accidental teledildonics expert’ Kyle Machulis (who I also had the pleasure of hearing speak at GDC), chatted with CNN about adult content in games. Sex in games, said Brathwaite, is a natural evolution in online life, and “[a]t the risk of sounding incredibly shallow, if you have women in a game, the men will come. A lot of the stuff that they’re doing is directly targeting women.”

How you might ask? Machulis offered his suggestions as to how the industry might attract more females to this game genre, saying: “developers are trying to draw inspiration from sexually charged fiction that has proven attractive to women, like Harlequin romance novels”.

Does this mean that soon I’ll have my very own virtual Fabio to play with? And game titles like “THE SHERIFF AND THE E-MAIL BRIDE”? Oh score!
