Wii Ads Snag The Grand Effie

by Erin on June 22nd, 2008

Another feather in the Nintendo Wii’s hat. The “Wii Would Like To Play” marketing campaign, headed up by agency Leo Burnett, was named “most effective” and awarded the Grand Effie at the 40th Annual Effie Awards, celebrating success in marketing.

Effie organizers described the Wii campaign by saying:

“The ‘Wii Would Like to Play’ campaign chose not to embrace an obvious strategy, namely fawning over the prized teenage male gamer. Instead, Wii targeted his mom, dad and grandmother. While the competition catered to a narrow audience, Wii invited everyone to play. As a result, the Wii has been sold out nationwide since the launch and ignited a cultural phenomenon in how people experience video games.”

No faint praise coming from an industry whose sole responsibility is to ingrain its message in the heads of consumers the world over. I really have to tip my hat to Leo Burnett on this one, as the Effies are not video game industry specific but rather cover the whole spectrum of marketing and advertising.

With great popularity comes an equal opportunity for mockery and some, like Comedy Gumbo, have had a great deal of fun at Nintendo’s expense.
