Wii Causes Injuries

by Ingrid on May 10th, 2007

As a note of caution for us Wii owners: the Nintendo console might be fun to play, but it’s also been the result of several injuries for players. Doctors have been warning people about the consequences of the Wii.

“The grip and position they’re working in might inflame and irritate the tendons in the elbow, similar to what you’d get if you had say, tennis elbow. We used to call it tennis elbow, but now its Wii elbow,” says John Haywood, a physiotherapist.

Shoulders, elbows and backs are most at risk, particularly in young people.

“You’re dealing with kids in the main who just want to get on with the activity. And the time just flies on by, and all of a sudden they’ve been working at this game for an hour and then things start to get tense and sore,” says Haywood.

Nintendo hasn’t yet received any legal actions as a result of these injuries, but it’s probably only a matter of time before someone seriously injures themselves and goes after the company. Nintendo has taken care to put warning labels on the Wii box, on the software, and in the packaging as a safety precaution method.

Doctors are saying that the key to proper Wii play is to warm up before setting off to spend an hour playing the virtual games. It’s important to treat it as if you were doing any other kind of exercise. Your body will thank you later.

The good news about the Wii, it has helped people get in better shape and lose weight. You can’t beat that.
