WoW is the New Golf

by Erin on February 16th, 2006

I got an IM this morning from a friend of mine in the PR business who, in her wanders through the intarweb, came across this article about WoW in PR Squared.

Apparently the zest for MMO’s hasn’t been restricted to gaming geeks in their mom’s basement, but has spread like wildfire through the business nerds and executives looking to spend some quality time doing something other than shuffle paper.

Rather than grudgingly forcing himself to wrangle business deals and suffer small talk in the time honoured tradition of the “business golf meeting”, blog author PR-Guy played video games. And discovered that many of his clients, previously stuffy suits, had similar addictions to World of Warcraft. Is there a new style of business meeting coming down the pipe? Quite possibly. 1Up has touched on the idea with this article detailing how some execs are using the interactive, community feel of WoW to broker their business deals.

Does it work? Will it become popular among geeks across the land? To find out, meet me in Tirisfal Glades by Brightwater Lake. We’ll discuss options over the bodies of some Shambling Horrors.

Says PR-Guy:

After all these years of assuming “golf is for men, video games are for kids,” it turns out we can make deals over the carcass of a blue dragon instead of over an empty martini glass. We can change the world!

At this rate, maybe some 50-something execs will feel pressured to give up their golf clubs for a +3 magic battle-axe!

Amen to that brother!

Don’t get me wrong Ingrid, you’re funny and cute (in a writing sort of way not a personal sort of way as I actually haven’t met you and I don’t want that taken the wrong way which it most probably will be now I’ve mentioned it and you’re now sitting there going “Eeewww who is this guy get him out of here”), big breath…, but you must admit Erin brings this whole thing back to an even keel :)

Now I’m off to play some golf. (Smell that fresh air!).

dum de dum de dum……… whistling a happy tune….. sauntering off into the distance.
