X-OOM Movies on PSP

by Ingrid on October 11th, 2005

If I had a PSP, I think this is a piece of software I’d definitely invest in. The X-OOM software converts DVDs into playable movie files on for the Sony handheld. And how long does something like that take to do? Well, according to this article (it’s in French, sorry), it takes 2 hours to convert a 100 minute film into a 256MB memory stick. That’s not too bad, all things considered. I understand the quality maintained is perfectly acceptable.

Movies on PSP features:

Converts DVDs & movie files to your Sony PSP!
World 1 st commercial video- & DVD software for Sony PSP!

More than 15 input formats (DVD, VCD, SVCD, DivX, AVI, WMV, MPEG, .. .)!

More than 10 Presets make conversion easy!

X-OOM Fit-to-stick technology resizes movie files to your memory stick size (256MB, 512MB, …)

Pretty nifty. Alas, my Zodiac is equally capable of playing movies, so I’ve yet to find a reason to give Sony my money. Still, if you’re a fellow gamer who loves movies and happen to have a PSP, perhaps this is worthwhile software to add to your collection.

I have not been able to reliably get DVDs onto my Zodiac. How do you do it? A how-to entry on that would be really helpful.

Laura - To be honest, I’ve yet to attempt getting a DVD into the Zodiac (I use it mainly for games and keeping track of my schedule and people’s addresses, and occasionally for music). Now I’m curious to see if I can figure it out. What have you tried so far?

I have used the Kinoma Producer to change mpegs to play on the Kinoma Player. I watched the entire first season of Numb3rs on my Zodiac.

When I use Kinoma Producer to change DVDs into a Kinoma format, the sound maxes out the Zodiac and it’s unwatchable. At particularly noisey points in Numb3rs, the sound would max out, but most of the time it was fine.

I was hoping there was something better out there to convert the DVDs that I own into something that I could watch on my Palm device, but I haven’t found anything that’s better than Kinoma Producer. Shucks…

I haven’t heard of anything other than Kinoma, and now that Tapwave went under, I doubt software companies are particularly invested in optimizing the Zodiac features. But perhaps there’s something out there that will work just as well. I’ll see if I can dig something up.

Be assured that if I hear of anything, and manage to make it work, I’ll get back to you on it. I’ll even write a how-to guide if it calls for it. :)
