Yamaoka On Games Industry: “Japan is in trouble”
The old saying that “the grass is greener on the other side” apparently applies to the game industry as well. While we sit here and moon at the Japanese video game industry, touting its innovation, its creativity and its delightful eccentricies, some, like score genius Akira Yamaoka, are looking back at the Western branch of the family with similar opinion.
Having worked in both Japanese and American studios on major projects, Yamaoka has the rare ability to examine the present and future directions for both with an insider’s insight and familiarity. What he has to say about the Japanese industry is surprising, and not all that favourable.
“…[O]verall, I’m really impressed with the American staff and their technology. Their graphical and technical ability is amazing. There’s a huge gap, actually. They’re very advanced. I’m Japanese… — I look at what American developers are doing and I think wow… Japan is in trouble.”
It’s a fascinating look at the other side of the coin, and an eye-opening damper on the development enthusiasm in the Asian market.
